Girl Rescued from Alleged Kidnapping
A 16-year-old girl in Michigan had a terrifying experience on Monday morning while waiting for a bus in Hamtramck. Reports indicate that a man approached her, brandished a gun, and forced her into a van. Hamtramck is located just north of Detroit.
The girl, who is a student at Frontier International Academy, managed to catch the attention of a classmate who witnessed the ordeal and promptly informed the authorities.
According to reports, the victim endured a sexual assault while inside the suspect’s vehicle.
Police quickly arrived at her school and gathered information from students who had tracked the suspect’s cellphone. This data led officers to a gas station in Detroit.
Approximately 25 minutes after the incident began, the suspect drove the girl to a Sunoco gas station and ordered her to buy cigarettes. Abdulrahman Abohatem, a store clerk, found the situation odd. “When he asked her to pay for the cigarettes, something felt off,” he recalled.
Just then, the girl signaled Abohatem with a silent plea for help.
“She communicated with me silently, almost verbally,” Abohatem stated. Her expression clearly conveyed, “Help me.”
Abohatem acted quickly, stepping out from behind the protective glass of the counter to confront the suspect. “I went outside, kicked him out, and directed the girl to the back,” he said.
As this unfolded, police arrived at the scene, coincidentally as Abohatem was escorting the suspect away from the store.
“I spotted the police and pointed. I told them, ‘That’s the guy,’” Abohatem recounted.
The suspect was placed under arrest without delay.
Mayor Adam Alharbi of Hamtramck commented on the situation, describing the suspect as a “criminal with a history of rape” and asserting that they would ensure he faces justice.
The girl’s family expressed relief that she was safe at home while the investigation continued, thanking the community for their support.
Police Chief Hussein Farhat noted that the incident was random; the suspect and the girl did not know each other prior to this encounter. “It seems he saw an opportunity and took advantage of it,” Farhat explained.
The suspect, identified as Donald J. Fields, 48, from Detroit, faced multiple charges including two counts of first-degree criminal sexual assault and one count of kidnapping. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and several counts of felonious assault. This marked his third offense, thereby labeling him a habitual offender.
Fields was remanded to the Wayne County Jail and denied bail. Previously, he served time for burglary and attempted sexual contact.
