Investigative Journalist Exposes H-1B Visa Abuse in Texas

Sarah Gonzalez, a host and investigative journalist, has gained attention for her viral reports detailing alleged large-scale abuse of H-1B visas in Texas. In her investigation, she uncovered questionable business practices, including fake companies and misleading job listings that appear to target only H-1B applicants. This prompted a swift governmental response.

In January, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a directive to halt all new H-1B visa applications from state agencies and public universities until May 2027, citing that these abuse cases are displacing local workers. Following this, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton initiated a probe into three companies in North Texas that are suspected of running sham businesses to sponsor H-1B visa workers.

In April, the Department of Justice imposed a fine of $313,420 on Compunnel Software Group for advertising a position exclusively for H-1B visa holders, a situation that Sarah had previously exposed.

Recently, Sarah mentioned that Senator J.D. Vance is now involved in addressing these issues. Just last month, the White House launched an anti-fraud task force led by Vance, which will also focus on the H-1B visa system.

During a speech at Turning Point USA in Georgia, Vance pointed out the significant fraud prevalent in the H-1B program, accusing major tech companies of exploiting it. He urged Congress to enact reforms, suggesting that changes made during the Trump administration had already resulted in a 90% decrease in new H-1B approvals.

While Sarah expresses gratitude for the Trump administration’s efforts to combat what she sees as an invasion, she adds, somewhat cautiously, that the current changes are only a “first step.” She argues that the ongoing high registration numbers and checks on renewals, alongside loopholes such as $100,000 fees and relentless sponsorship from big tech firms, indicate that more action is necessary.

Sarah concludes with a sense of urgency, stating, “If there is fraud, it will be noticed, and those involved will find ways to exploit it. So Congress needs to tackle this. We require a fresh plan because, quite frankly, the system still feels broken.”
