In a 2025 report by the United Nations, it was claimed that President Donald Trump and his supporters saved over 1,000 migrants from potential death while attempting to reach the U.S. border, which is primarily controlled by Democrats.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicated, “In the Americas, migrant deaths fell significantly in 2025, dropping from 1,272 in 2024 to just 408 in 2025,” according to a report from April 21.
The noticeable decline in survival rates is largely attributed to a significant reduction in migrant fatalities. The organization, led by Amy Pope, a nominee from President Joe Biden, reported that travel along high-risk and irregular routes was being restricted.
Additionally, deaths in the Caribbean, including among Haitian migrants, saw a decline, attributed to Trump’s measures deterring migrant arrivals in the U.S. The IOM noted, “The number of fatalities also decreased, with 130 recorded deaths in 2025 compared to 302 in 2024. The death toll on the route from Caribbean islands to the U.S. was recorded at just 5 in 2025, a significant drop from 187 in 2024.”
On another note, the IOM’s report highlighted a tragic number of 3,500 migrant deaths on the journey to Europe, marking a record high. It pointed out that transnational elites continue to exploit immigration policies, contributing to what they described as chaos.
While it may be encouraging that 1,000 lives were spared in the Americas, this news poses a challenge for many progressives, journalists, and immigration advocates who believed that Biden’s border policies would be compassionate and life-saving.
Advocates for immigration had argued that Biden’s policies were rooted in humanitarian efforts, facilitating the journey for millions of migrants to the U.S. during his term from 2021 to 2025. However, government data has since contradicted these claims, revealing that a majority of immigrants were primarily motivated by economic aspirations rather than safety from threats.
Thousands have faced perilous journeys—battling risks along the trails and waterways that led them to the U.S. Approximately 10 deaths were noted in the Darien Gap region by 2025, a sharp drop from 174 in 2024.
Even amidst grave conditions, there were disturbing incidents. Migrants’ dangerous experiences were recounted, like the account of a couple navigating through the treacherous Darien Gap, where only a fraction of their group survived.
In reflection of these struggles, a recent New York Times piece highlighted the horrific circumstances some migrants faced as they traversed multiple countries to reach their destination, enduring heart-wrenching moments along the way.
Yet, even as some routes were purportedly made safer, tragic accidents continued to claim lives—many due to unmanaged situations in U.S. workplaces where risks were prevalent.
Details from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that, while the fatal accident rate for Hispanic or Latino workers saw a slight decrease, the previous year had recorded a significant number among foreign-born workers.
Despite the continuous struggles faced by immigrants, progressives celebrated the influx of new arrivals, yet concerns over rising crime in communities receiving them have started to reshape political landscapes, with early indications of shifts in voter sentiments arising from these immigration policies.
