Steve Beuerlein, once a quarterback for the Super Bowl-winning team, is now using AI technology to predict potential heart issues as he enters his 60s. In a recent conversation, he candidly reflected on the idea of mortality as he ages.

“As you get a little older, you think about your mortality a bit more,” Beuerlein shared during an interview.

He recently joined Heartflow’s Gamefilm Registry, which leverages advanced technology to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease. Beuerlein expressed that after researching the company, he was impressed by the innovative AI-driven approach they were taking for early heart disease detection.

Having seen his father struggle with cardiovascular issues for three decades, Beuerlein felt a personal connection to this technology. “I’d always been curious about my own heart health, so I went through the testing process. Honestly, it was a quick and painless experience, and I found the results thorough and, thankfully, positive for me,” he noted.

One aspect that stood out to him was the ease with which the technology could convey complex information. “The test is straightforward, but the AI aspect makes interpreting the results much simpler,” he commented.

Beuerlein described how the process allows patients to visualize a 3D model of their heart, enabling them to see it from various angles. It highlights areas where plaque may accumulate, which is essential for understanding heart health.

He emphasized that both hard and soft plaque can pose serious risks. This testing not only gives a snapshot of one’s heart condition but also empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward maintaining their heart health.

“It’s alarming, but a significant number of first heart attack incidents happen unexpectedly. Many people have no clue they’re at risk,” Beuerlein pointed out. “HeartFlow is addressing this gap with its new technology.”

As a retired NFL quarterback, Beuerlein has had an extensive career spanning 14 seasons, playing for teams like the Los Angeles Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys, where he was a backup during the Super Bowl win in 1992. He reflected on his time in the sport and the importance of health, especially in the context of his father’s health struggles.

The journey he took with Heartflow is a testament to the advancing technologies in heart health assessment, providing a pathway for more individuals to understand their risks and take charge of their heart health.
