Trump Urges Senate Republicans to Remove Filibuster: 'Don't Be Foolish'

Trump Urges Senate Republicans to End Filibuster for Voter Registration Bill

President Donald Trump is calling on Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster in order to pass the Save America Act, which mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration. This push isn’t new; he’s been vocal about it since October, recently using Truth Social to convey his message directly to Senate members.

In a pointed message, he questioned, “How much abuse can the Republican Senate take from radical left lunatics in the form of Democratic senators before blowing up the filibuster and approving the Save America Act? That would be unthinkable without ending the filibuster, right?” He further emphasized, “Democrats will do it in the first hour of the first day. Don’t be stupid!!!”

The Save America Act seeks to enforce proof of citizenship when registering to vote and includes a voter ID requirement. It also aims to end universal mail-in voting, with exceptions for specific reasons such as illness, travel, disability, or military service.

Moreover, the legislation proposes protections for women’s sports and bans transgender surgeries for minors, a topic President Trump previously addressed through executive action. A recent Harvard-Harris University poll indicates a notable level of support for key facets of this act across various political affiliations.

The poll revealed that 61 percent of Democratic respondents, a striking 90 percent of Republicans, and 73 percent of independents support the idea of proving citizenship to vote. Additionally, over 80% across all parties believe voting should be restricted solely to U.S. citizens.

Senators Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) are now joining the call for Republicans to lift the filibuster, advocating for a straightforward majority vote regarding the future of the American Rescue Act. Responding to Trump’s remarks, Scott noted on X that the president was “exactly right.”

He criticized Democrats, pointing out, “They won’t fund DHS. They won’t pass the SAVE America Act. They don’t care about the country.” He concluded, emphasizing the need to dismantle the filibuster to make progress for the American people.

Similarly, Lee weighed in, stating, “Democrats are going to nuke the filibuster the next time they get the chance.”
