Man accused of attempted murder in Jewish stabbing incident in London

A man, 45 years old, has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbings of two Jewish men in London on Friday. This incident adds to a growing number of attacks that have sparked fear and outrage within the Jewish community in Britain.

According to police, Essa Suleiman is facing charges related to the attack in Golders Green. Additionally, he is also charged with third-degree attempted murder for a separate incident where he injured another man in a different part of the city earlier that same day.

Authorities have classified the Golders Green attack as an act of terrorism.

Officials mentioned that Suleiman was directed to a government program aimed at prevention of extremism in 2020, but his case was closed by the end of that year. However, they did not elaborate on the reasons behind the referral.

Suleiman, who was born in Somalia and is a British citizen residing in London, is set to appear in court later today.

The British government has committed to addressing the issue of anti-Semitism following this stabbing incident in a key area for the Jewish community in north London.

The victims, aged 34 and 76, sustained serious injuries. Reports indicate that one of them has already been released from the hospital, while the other is in stable condition.

This violent event follows a string of arson attacks targeting synagogues and Jewish organizations in London over the past few weeks.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the government plans to enhance security for the Jewish community and will “do everything in our power to stamp out this hatred”.

In response to the stabbing incident, the nation’s official terror threat level has been escalated from “substantial” to “severe.” This elevated status is the second highest on a five-point scale, indicating that intelligence agencies believe an attack is likely within the next six months.

The government clarified that this adjustment isn’t solely related to the Golders Green attack but reflects a broader concern over potential “Islamist and far-right terrorist threats posed by individuals and small groups based in the UK”.
