China maintains that relations with the US are stable ahead of Trump's visit despite some challenges.

China’s Diplomatic Stance on U.S. Relations

On Thursday, China’s leading diplomat noted that relations with the United States remain largely stable, even amid “many twists and turns and turmoil.” He emphasized that both nations should seek ways to promote world peace, particularly as President Trump’s visit approaches.

During a meeting with a bipartisan delegation from the U.S. Congress, led by Senator Steve Daines, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi commended both President Xi Jinping and President Trump for their roles in steering bilateral relations during this crucial time.

“Despite the various challenges faced over the past year, China-U.S. relations have shown an ability to remain stable overall,” Wang remarked.

Senator Daines, who is part of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a staunch supporter of President Trump, echoed Wang’s sentiments, saying both nations should strive for stability. “We want détente, not separation. Stability and mutual respect are key,” he stated.

Daines also suggested that following next week’s summit, there could be increased purchases of Boeing planes, something he indicated is a priority for the U.S.

Additionally, he acknowledged China’s actions to mitigate tensions in the Middle East and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He pointed to a recent meeting between Wang and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragushi as evidence of China’s growing involvement.

As President Trump prepares for his upcoming visit to China on May 14-15, Washington is urging Beijing to leverage its influence over Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passageway for global oil trade.

This marks Daines’ second trip to China since President Trump’s inauguration last year. His earlier visit in March 2025 occurred during a period of heightened tensions, particularly over trade tariffs and the fight against illicit fentanyl trafficking.
