Hawaiian Local Praised for Protecting Monk Seal
A Hawaiian resident has been celebrated as a hero for assaulting a Seattle tourist who allegedly threw a rock at a monk seal, a species that is endangered and referred to as “lani” by locals. This act of vigilantism, as some have dubbed it, has even earned him a commendation from the state.
On Tuesday, a 37-year-old tourist reportedly approached the seal while it was swimming near Front Street in Lahaina and threw a large stone at it. This upsetting behavior didn’t go unnoticed, as it was captured on video and shared widely on social media. According to reports from the Hawaii Department of Natural Resources, the response from onlookers was swift.
One local, angered by what had occurred, chased down the tourist and punched him multiple times, as seen in the clips circulating online. This video quickly attracted considerable attention, racking up likes and comments that praised the local’s actions as a form of just retribution.
State Senator Brenton Awa even took note of the incident, presenting a letter of commendation to the individuals involved in the altercation at the Capitol. He remarked that while he doesn’t condone violence—emphasizing the need to educate visitors on respecting the environment—such reactions show a passionate defense of local wildlife and property.
“We often see visitors with a different mindset come in and damage our natural resources,” he mentioned, suggesting that airlines might consider showing awareness videos to discourage such behavior.
The tourist, whose name hasn’t been released, was briefly detained by authorities before being released after consulting a lawyer. No formal charges have been filed yet.
Maui Mayor Richard Bissen expressed disapproval of the incident in a social media post, reinforcing that the island welcomes respectful visitors who understand the importance of treating wildlife with respect. “This is simply not the kind of visitor we want here,” he stated.
The incident resonated deeply within the community, especially as Lani the monk seal has become a symbol of hope and recovery following the devastating wildfires in Lahaina.
Community members have come together to protect Lani since her return after the wildfires, demonstrating their care and concern for her well-being, as highlighted by an official post from Maui County.
Commenters on social media expressed their anticipation for the tourist’s reckoning, with some speculating on the consequences he might face. If charged under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, he could potentially face significant fines and jail time. The enforcement division of the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources has referred the case to federal prosecutors for further investigation.
