Trump and Xi's stance revealed a lot about how their significant meeting in China unfolded, according to a body language expert.

Feet can reveal a lot.

According to body language specialists, the positioning of President Trump and Xi Jinping’s feet during their recent meeting was significant to the success of their high-profile summit.

“It’s all about the toes. The way they were oriented towards one another while seated is quite telling,” noted Lillian Glass, a Florida-based body language expert with experience in legal settings, sharing her insights.

On Friday, Xi guided Trump through his official residence in Zhongnanhai, showcasing beautiful gardens before they met in an elegant pavilion for a tea discussion.

Glass indicated that the way their toes pointed towards each other suggested a “connection” between the leaders.

“Feet are crucial. If they were angled outward, that would signal tension,” she explained.

She added, “Think about it—if you were uncomfortable, you’d instinctively want to leave, and your feet would indicate that. But that wasn’t the case here.”

Trump expressed appreciation for Xi’s warm hospitality, calling the visit remarkable. “I believe many good things came from this,” he mentioned as they walked through the gardens.

He described Xi as someone he “respects greatly” and emphasized their desire for friendship. “We’ve known each other for almost 12 years, resolving various issues together. Our relationship is strong,” he remarked.

Glass observed that both leaders appeared more at ease as the meeting progressed. “They seemed much more relaxed compared to the first day,” she pointed out.

Reflecting on their initial interactions, she mentioned how uncertainty created tension. “It’s like two old friends or a comfortable pair of shoes,” she added.

She noted that their initial day involved more formalities, with Xi presenting his troops and meetings with Chinese and U.S. officials.

“Here, they could really let their guard down,” she commented. “Trump was visibly relaxed, and so was Xi, which is somewhat unusual for him.”

As they strolled through a corridor adorned with green pillars and traditional art, Trump admired the beautiful roses, remarking to Xi how stunning they were.

Previously, Xi hosted leaders like Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin at the same venue.

During their meal, Trump and Xi enjoyed kung pao chicken and scallops, while others indulged in McDonald’s meals, as Trump concluded his visit to China.

In their discussions on Thursday, Trump and Xi covered topics such as economic collaboration, the fight against fentanyl exports, and the contentious issue of the Iran conflict.

The White House shared that they agreed on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and free from militarization, with Xi expressing the need for China to reduce its dependence on the Strait by potentially purchasing more U.S. oil.

They also concurred on the stance that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons.

While Taiwan wasn’t directly mentioned in the White House summary, Trump remained unusually tight-lipped on the subject when questioned, drawing attention from reporters.

A spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted that the Taiwan issue is of paramount importance in U.S.-China relations and warned that unresolved issues could lead to conflict.

Ultimately, ensuring peace in the Taiwan Strait is viewed as a common goal for both nations.
