Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovations Update

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump posted images of the ongoing renovations at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which is being refurbished in anticipation of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The project is expected to be completed by July 4.

The photos captured both ends of the pool, showcasing the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument against a backdrop of blue sky and fluffy clouds reflecting on the water’s surface.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump noted, “Progressing very well! It should be completed by our target date of Independence Day.” He emphasized his administration’s efforts to enhance construction materials, highlighting improvements such as surface quality, sandblasted granite, and new sidewalks.

Trump remarked on the scope of the renovation, stating, “I made this a much larger undertaking and a much longer life than I originally thought for cosmetic purposes. We also used a higher quality sealer that is more reflective. Check it out before opening. It’s a very exciting project!”

However, some critics have raised concerns about the choice of materials, claiming that the pool will be resurfaced with an “industrial-grade” product in a color dubbed “Stars and Stripes Blue.” A nonprofit organization, the Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF), has even filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS) to halt the renovation project.

According to the TCLF, the bright blue coating could change the visual character of the pool dramatically, likening it more to a swimming pool than the reflective space it was designed to be. They argue that such alterations should undergo thorough review given the pool’s historical significance.

TCLF President and CEO Charles A. Birnbaum commented, “The number one question is whether the law was followed before the painting began.” He noted that given the pool’s status on the National Register of Historic Places, its renovation should comply with the National Historic Preservation Act.

Trump’s posts have indicated a focus on high-quality repairs and a commitment to completing the work ahead of schedule. However, reports from the New York Times noted ongoing concerns regarding air bubbles and incomplete surface coatings. Interior officials suggested that as of Sunday, only a portion of the surface was adequately coated, raising doubts about meeting the Independence Day timeline.

Amidst the mixed feedback, an Interior Department spokeswoman assured that various parts of the basin are at different stages of restoration, and the final product will be uniform. “As with any project, process revisions will be made to ensure the most efficient tools are used to achieve the end goal,” she added.

Responses from the White House and other parties regarding the ongoing project have not been provided yet. It seems there’s still plenty of work ahead for the Reflecting Pool before it’s ready for the celebration.
