Graham on Cassidy’s Loss: No Place for Anti-Trump Sentiment in GOP
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) commented on Senator Bill Cassidy’s (R-La.) defeat in the Louisiana Republican primary, stating it highlights the lack of tolerance within the Republican Party for opposition to President Donald Trump’s policies.
Host Kristen Welker inquired about Cassidy’s loss, pointing out that he voted to convict Trump in 2021 and questioning whether Graham was pleased that Cassidy is no longer a colleague. Graham expressed his fondness for Cassidy, saying, “No, I like Bill. I thought he was a great senator, but he made such a political decision.” Graham remarked that Cassidy’s impeachment vote would be detrimental to his political future, suggesting it prevents him from running for president again.
He emphasized that political figures opposing Trump face significant risks, asserting, “People who are trying to destroy Trump politically are going to lose.” He raised the question of what political strategies would be acceptable, suggesting that attempting to undermine Trump could be a fatal mistake for Republicans. Graham stated, “There is no room in this party to destroy his policies or to destroy him and his family as a Republican.” He warned that aligning with Democrats or trying to block Trump’s policies would ultimately lead to failure.
Graham did acknowledge that he sometimes disagrees with Trump but credited him for his support during his own political journey, adding, “I think President Trump is doing a very good job.”
