Morrisey aims at Virginia companies with West Virginia tax proposal

Angel Mom argues that Spanberger's statements about ICE are incorrect and deceptive.

Economic Tensions Between Virginia and West Virginia

Tabler Station, West Virginia — A wave of new taxes and regulations in Virginia has prompted West Virginia’s Governor, Patrick Morrisey, to strategically attract businesses and workers from the neighboring state.

While Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger advocates for “affordability policies,” recent proposals from legislative Democrats—many of which have not reached her desk—are opening doors for West Virginia to compete for both residents and businesses.

Even though Spanberger might not support all these measures, West Virginia officials are seizing the opportunity to promote their own agenda, emphasizing tax cuts and reduced regulations as incentives.

Morrissey expressed his intent to engage directly with communities in Virginia, particularly in Loudoun County, with the hope of drawing attention to West Virginia’s potential benefits for businesses and employees.

He emphasized, “We will spend time making pitches in Loudoun County and throughout Virginia, comparing where West Virginia is going.” He also mentioned the newly announced 275-acre commercial tax district in the Eastern Panhandle, which he predicts could generate around $200 million in investment.

“The local brawl over economic futures is shaping up at both the dinner table and within the marketplace,” Morrissey stated, adding that the Tabler Station initiative is just a part of multiple plans being rolled out across the state.

The Eastern Panhandle is home to the national apple industry and boasts significant industrial plants, including a notable Clorox facility that actively recruits employees along Interstate 81.

“While Virginia opts for heavier taxes, West Virginia chooses a path that emphasizes freedom and business competitiveness,” Morrissey remarked, assuring that they intend to keep West Virginia welcoming for business.

The governor suggested that Berkeley and Jefferson Counties could serve as models for regional tourism and economic development, especially in comparison to high-tax areas across the state line.

Despite long commute times, workers from the Washington, D.C. region are increasingly relocating to West Virginia’s areas, indicating a potential shift in economic dynamics.

Fox News Digital reached out to Spanberger for her perspective on this issue.

Spanberger, while supporting some measures like a minimum wage increase, has not endorsed several tax recommendations that were not formally presented to her.

State Sen. Jason Barrett (R-Martinsburg), who helped craft the economic development plan, noted that many individuals are already crossing into West Virginia to shop and support local enterprises.

The new legislation aims to create special tax districts to support local economies, thus enhancing the region’s revenue while avoiding adverse effects on the national budget.

Morrissey anticipates that an influx of new residents and a broadened tax base will lead to even more economic growth, allowing areas like Berkeley and Jefferson to develop as travel destinations and venues for youth sporting events.

With Richmond’s focus on tax hikes, Morrissey recently enacted a 5% income tax cut, aligning West Virginia’s tax policies with federal cuts.

Morrissey indicated that this wouldn’t be his last outreach to Virginia for economic growth, noting the addition of 12,000 jobs and $12.5 billion in private investment over the recent months.

In response, Spanberger announced a tour in Virginia aimed at “creating a clear, forward-looking plan” for economic development that benefits all Virginians. She recently visited areas like Harrisonburg and Fairfax to collaborate on this vision.

While certain regions in West Virginia continue to face challenges, particularly in the energy sector, population growth and rising state revenues are enabling significant tax cuts that contrast with Virginia’s new financial burdens.
