Jeff Bezos Critiques Left-Wing Policies in CNBC Interview

In a recent CNBC interview that garnered attention on social media, Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, shared his thoughts on various leftist policies. He voiced strong opposition to plans aimed at raising taxes on wealthy individuals while advocating instead for tax cuts for those at the lower end of the economic spectrum. The interview took place on the factory floor of his aerospace venture, Blue Origin.

“They shouldn’t ask this nurse in Queens to send money to Washington. They should send her an apology!” he exclaimed during the conversation with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin.

Bezos pointed out that almost half of Americans shouldn’t even be required to pay federal income taxes. He offered an example of a hypothetical nurse in Queens earning $75,000 a year, who ends up paying approximately $12,000 in federal income taxes. “If we’re discussing making the tax system more progressive, why not start by ensuring that nurses in Queens don’t have to pay taxes? That would make sense,” he stated.

His frustration continued as he questioned why a nurse would pay over $1,000 a month in taxes when that money could be better spent on necessities like rent and groceries. Interestingly, he highlighted that the lower half of earners in the country contribute only 3% of total taxes. “It’s really a minimal amount of money for the government,” he noted, arguing that the current system seemed absurd. “Honestly, the way things are set up right now is just ridiculous.”

He was open to discussing how much wealthy individuals should be taxed. However, he accused politicians of distracting voters with rhetoric rather than focusing on addressing underlying issues that contribute to inflation and other economic challenges. “We don’t have a revenue problem in this country; rather, what we have is a spending problem,” Bezos remarked, indicating that the school system in New York City spends around $44,000 on each child without achieving effective outcomes.

Making a light-hearted comparison, he joked, “If we ran Amazon like the New York City school system, my package would take six weeks to arrive, I’d be charged $100 for shipping, and it would arrive with the wrong item!” Of course, Sorkin did not share the laughter.

Bezos made it clear that while he supports higher taxes on the wealthy, simply doubling his taxes wouldn’t alleviate the challenges faced by individuals like the hypothetical nurse in Queens. “There’s just no logical connection there,” he said.
