Newsom Urges Californians to Avoid Chevron Amid Gas Price Controversy
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom is urging residents to steer clear of Chevron this holiday weekend. This follows the company’s displays accusing the state government of driving up gas prices.
In a post on X, Newsom suggested that Californians opt for “off-brand” gasoline instead. He explained, “If you’re out this weekend, avoid Chevron. Here’s a tip: Unbranded gas is sourced from the same refineries and meets the same standards for keeping your engine clean, even if it lacks a catchy name like ‘Techron.'” He went on to criticize Big Oil for profiting enormously, referencing the financial gains from President Trump’s policies, and cautioned against overpaying for brand names.
Although not explicitly stated, Newsom’s remarks came after Chevron placed signs at various locations, attributing rising gas prices to government actions. One of the signs read, “Sacramento’s policies got this done. Now we’ll pay more,” adding that local jobs and cost savings were being overlooked in favor of foreign oil.
As reported by the American Automobile Association, the average gas price in California hit $6.14 per gallon as of Thursday, significantly higher than the national average by about $1.58. The state imposes around 70 cents in taxes on each gallon, the highest in the nation.
The newspaper also noted that Newsom, who often highlights California’s commitment to addressing climate change, has pushed for measures to reduce oil company profits and decrease gas prices. In 2023, he enacted a law allowing the state Energy Commission to impose penalties on oil companies for excessive profits. However, plans to enforce these penalties were postponed until 2030 in favor of other consumer protection efforts.
Chevron’s spokesman, Ross Allen, mentioned that the company initiated its campaign three years ago to raise awareness among consumers about California’s policies. He emphasized the need for drivers to understand where their tax dollars are allocated.
