Colbert and Stewart Reunite Amid Trump Criticism
On Tuesday’s episode of the late show, Stephen Colbert welcomed his former sidekick Jon Stewart back, sparking an emotional reunion between the two. They exchanged heartfelt compliments while also launching into sharp critiques of the Trump administration, which they deemed “rotten.”
Colbert began the segment by reflecting on the early days of their collaboration on Comedy Central. He shared a nostalgic moment by presenting Stewart with a photo of them both from 27 years ago, taken behind the Daily Show desk.
Stewart quipped, “One of us isn’t as old as the other,” taking a lighthearted jab at himself. He likened the moment to a study with one participant receiving an anti-aging treatment while the other got a placebo.
Stewart recounted some advice from David Letterman, which he found quite profound: “Don’t confuse cancellation with failure.” Yet, he humorously added, “But in this case, that’s also a failure.”
He expressed aspirations for a future free of President Trump, encouraging viewers to envision a time when the American electorate might turn against the current administration.
“Oh, my friends, close your eyes and dream that one day the voters of this great country will reject this corrupt government,” he urged passionately.
Stewart continued, “When that day arrives, let me tell you—there will be a roar of joy that will overshadow Hungary’s rejection of Orbán. We are tired. We are tired.”
He later criticized the President’s behavior, claiming, “The Commander-in-Chief’s persistent abuse impacts all of us as his opposition. It’s just a ridiculous setup—a part of the entertainment machine you call a show. And honestly, it’s frustrating.”
Before diving into criticism of Trump, Stewart remarked, “The only solace I find is that I don’t think Trump has a telegraph. I think it’s a network problem.” So, perhaps there’s still hope.
Colbert has only two episodes of the late show left before taking a break.
