Hasan Piker’s Frustration Over Subpoena Response
Streaming personality Hasan Piker has voiced his disappointment with the Democratic Party for not supporting him after receiving a subpoena from U.S. federal authorities linked to his recent trip to Cuba.
Piker, known as an online commentator and the nephew of Cenk Uygur from The Young Turks, reportedly got a “request for information” from the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) over the weekend. This investigation is focused on Piker, Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin, and approximately 40 other U.S. citizens who participated in the Nuestra América convoy, a gathering of leftist activists and politicians supporting Cuba’s government, which took place in March.
The inquiry seeks to clarify whether they violated U.S. sanctions against Cuba, which is designated as a state sponsor of terrorism. Piker and others involved have claimed their visit was aimed at providing humanitarian aid and showing support for the Cuban Communist Party.
On Monday, Piker expressed his thoughts on social media, referring to those who praised the subpoena as “fucking idiots.” He also criticized prominent Democrats such as Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton, suggesting that their more moderate approaches led to their defeats against Donald Trump in the past elections.
“They think you’re all communists. They’re after you too,” he commented, continuing to voice his frustrations with the Democratic establishment. Piker accused the party of being disconnected from its base and catering to a political and media elite.
“There are left-wing candidates gaining traction in the Democratic primary, and the centrist crowd seems afraid,” he added, hinting at a shift within the party’s dynamics.
During a lengthy Twitch stream, Piker claimed that the OFAC investigation might be targeting tech billionaire and activist Neville Roy Singham, who has connections to various leftist organizations. He alleged that Singham has links to China and has funded several radical groups.
Piker protested that the subpoena wasn’t about his Cuba trip alone but about his outspoken anti-American and anti-Israel views. He stated that his critics are not fond of his strong comments on Israel, arguing that younger Democrats are leaning more toward anti-Israel sentiments.
In his Sunday stream, Piker expressed doubt that New York’s socialist mayor, Zoran Mamdani, would support him, suggesting that the incident was outside of local political interests. He seemed skeptical, saying, “Maybe he’ll prove me wrong.”
Piker has consistently criticized the U.S. and Israel through his online platforms. He lives in a sizable home in Los Angeles and has been embroiled in numerous controversies over his comments on various issues, including recent tensions involving Israel and Hamas, as well as allegations about animal abuse regarding his pet.
