Sen. Chris Murphy Supports Maine’s Graham Platner Amid Controversy

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, has thrown his support behind Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Senate in Maine. Murphy believes that voters resonate with Platner’s commitment to addressing the concerns of “ordinary people.”

This endorsement comes at a time when Democratic leaders feel pressured to disassociate from Platner due to old Reddit posts resurfacing, wherein he made unsavory remarks about U.S. soldiers and crude comments about masturbation. This controversy could jeopardize the Democrats’ hopes of flipping seats currently held by Republicans in Maine to regain a Senate majority.

“Maine people seem to appreciate that he’s discussing the challenges many regular folks are facing,” Murphy remarked in an interview. He also criticized current senators for what he described as backing corrupt policies within the administration.

Although Murphy has yet to provide a formal endorsement for Platner, when asked if he would withdraw his support given the scandal surrounding the now-deleted Reddit posts, Murphy stood firm: “I support him,” he stated.

Before the negative information about Platner came to light, Murphy had complimented Platner’s progressive campaign as “killer” and deemed him “pretty impressive.”

When questioned about his ongoing support, Murphy shifted the focus toward election polls: “What do the votes look like now in Maine?” he inquired, showing optimism about Platner’s standing. “I still think he’s winning, right?”

Polls Show Platner Leading

Recent polling data shows Platner with a lead over incumbent Senator Susan Collins, a Republican who has been in office since 1996. Reports indicate that Platner has an approval rating of 51% among likely voters in Maine, compared to Collins’ 42%. Interestingly, despite lagging in earlier polls, Collins is not backing down as she campaigns for re-election for a fifth term.

Interestingly, Democrat Platner enjoys strong support from his party, with 76% approval from likely Democratic primary voters, dwarfing the 3% support for former state and federal official David Costello. Former Governor Janet Mills, who was initially Platner’s main opponent, suspended her campaign in late April but will still appear on the ballot due to the timing of her withdrawal. Currently, polls indicate she garners only 10% support.

High Stakes for Democrats

Murphy’s ongoing backing of Platner occurs as Democrats consider the implications of his controversial online history, which could negatively impact their chances in a crucial race that may determine the future Senate majority. Currently, Republicans hold a slight edge at 53-47, and the Maine election is poised to attract significant attention.

According to the Cook Political Report, the race is currently categorized as “lean Republican,” highlighting its competitive nature and the high stakes involved for Democrats aiming to achieve one of their key targets in 2026.

Despite the backlash from Platner’s resurfaced comments made under the nickname “P-Hustle,” Democrats have largely chosen to maintain their support for him. The primary election in Maine is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9th.
