Clovis Track Meet Sparks Heated Exchanges
Chaos erupted outside a California state championship track and field meet, as police were called in response to tensions between Save Girls Sports activists and pro-LGBTQ supporters. The event, hosted by local advocacy groups like Pride at the Pier and Rainbow Families Action, took place in Clovis, where transgender athlete AB Hernandez was competing for state titles in three jump events.
Hernandez’s mother, Nereida Hernandez, along with other LGBTQ advocates, spoke in support of her child. As the press conference wrapped up, members of Save Girls Sports arrived, leading to a heated confrontation with the activists present.
With a Clovis Police Department vehicle stationed nearby, officers monitored the escalating situation. Remarkably, they didn’t intervene directly, and the tension eventually subsided on its own.
The Clovis Police Department chose not to comment on the matter.
Beth Vaughn, a prominent figure from Save Girls Sports, expressed her concerns afterward. She emphasized, “It’s not just unfair to female athletes, but also to AB Hernandez, to distort biological reality.”
LGBTQ advocate Daisy Gardner responded to Vaughn, suggesting a path toward understanding. “I hope she learns, educates, opens her heart, and heals with her family,” Gardner remarked.
This year’s CIF state finals are not without controversy, marking the second consecutive year that Hernandez’s participation has sparked debate. Last year, counterprotesters also made their presence known, leading to the arrest of a transgender activist for allegedly assaulting a Save Girls Sports member holding a pride flag.
