Clashes Erupt Between Protesters and Police in Newark

Newark, New Jersey – On Friday evening, an organized group of protesters invaded a designated “First Amendment zone,” despite orders from state police, leading to intense confrontations with law enforcement.

Governor Mikie Sherrill claimed that the police were present to safeguard demonstrators from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). However, the protesters soon found themselves directly at odds with state police aiming to control the situation.

“For your safety, please move to the First Amendment zone,” a police officer told the crowd via a pay phone.

“We don’t do that. We’re here to express the First Amendment,” one protester replied.

Police Take Heavy Measures Against Rioters

Hours later, police implemented strict riot control measures, utilizing noise bombs, tear gas, pepper spray, and shields. Earlier that day, a fence had been erected, but protesters quickly dismantled it to push back against the officers.

Sherrill expressed her concerns on social media, stating, “My top priority is to keep New Jerseyans and our community safe, and the increase in ICE presence in the area outside Delaney Hall is a threat to public safety.” She noted that she wouldn’t accept any risk to her safety.

Claims and Controversies

She characterized the riot control measures as essential to protect public safety and to prevent escalation from ICE. New Jersey is known as a “sanctuary state,” and collaboration between federal immigration authorities and local police is quite limited.

While Governor Sherrill highlighted the supposed threats from ICE, the agency expressed gratitude for the police presence, indicating that it helped diminish violence.

In a notable incident, one individual was charged with assault after allegedly attacking a federal officer during the demonstration.

“Thank you @NJSP for your cooperation in restoring law and order,” an ICE spokesperson stated. “This partnership sends a clear message that assault, intimidation, and abuse of law enforcement officers will not be tolerated.”

The Department of Homeland Security also expressed appreciation for local authorities, highlighting the threats faced by its employees during the confrontations.

Organized Protest Efforts

Protesters argue for better treatment of those held at the detention center, claiming mistreatment, yet DHS counters that the detainees receive proper meals and are compensated for their work. It was noted that many individuals at the facility are undocumented and have committed crimes in the U.S.

Although ICE agents responded with pepper balls, significant damage occurred to vehicles amidst the clashes, with many involved experiencing pepper spray and tear gas effects.

The protests, now ongoing for a week, are becoming a major focus, with organized supplies supplied to the demonstrators. The atmosphere was charged, with heightened police visibility on a following Saturday morning, which also featured counter-protesters supporting ICE.
