Piker Critiques Sherrill Over Immigration Policies

During a recent livestream, political commentator Hasan Piker lashed out at New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, claiming she’s backing the Trump administration’s immigration policies. His comments followed Sherrill’s defense of deploying state troopers to manage a protest outside the Newark Detention Center.

Sherrill stated she wouldn’t allow violence to justify expanding federal immigration actions within the state. “I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE an excuse,” she remarked, prompting Piker’s immediate derision.

“Yeah, I’m not going to give ICE an excuse. So I’m going to make sure that ICE doesn’t have to do anything because I’m going to do it myself,” Piker remarked. He then critiqued the dynamics of the state’s current leadership, suggesting a compliance with the federal government’s agendas.

As the discussion broadened, Piker expressed frustration over the entire approach of the moderate Democratic Party. “Folks, this is a moderate Democratic Party. This is what’s happening,” he said.

Amid ongoing protests at Delaney Hall, activists have raised concerns about the treatment of detainees, alleging poor living conditions and inadequate food. However, the Department of Homeland Security disputes these assertions.

In the stream, Piker suggested that Sherrill was enabling Trump’s immigration policies. He emphasized that it’s not the far-left activists causing trouble at ICE but rather the “horrific conditions” inside the facility. Yet, he characterized Sherrill’s response as one of seeing herself as powerless to address the situation.

Piker specifically criticized the actions of state troopers, describing them as brutal towards New Jersey residents. He also accused officials of mistreating journalists covering the protests and compared their behavior to that of oppressive regimes.

“These are state troopers committing brutality against the people of New Jersey,” he commented, adding a comparison of their actions to “Israeli occupation forces.” His remarks reflected his strong stance on how the protests were being managed, particularly concerning media coverage.

Later in the discussion, Piker called out Democratic lawmakers for their complicity in current immigration practices, asserting that many support enforcement measures. “I want to change that system,” he declared, emphasizing the need to elect those who would challenge the status quo.

In recent months, Piker has been actively supporting candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America. During the livestream, he also voiced his backing for billionaire gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer and referenced Mao Zedong, which added complexity to his narrative.

Earlier in the year, Piker had campaigned for Congressional candidate Adam Hammy, also backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. Sherrill’s office has not yet responded to inquiries regarding Piker’s criticisms.
