Update on U.S.-Iran Negotiations Amid Regional Tensions
President Donald Trump shared that peace talks between the United States and Iran are supposedly moving forward rapidly, despite claims from Iranian media suggesting the negotiations have been paused. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that efforts to engage with Iran are ongoing.
“Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran continue at a rapid pace,” Trump mentioned briefly.
However, Iranian state media has reported that the government in Tehran has suspended indirect talks with the U.S., attributing this decision to an uptick in Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
When pressed by reporters about the status of negotiations, Trump asserted he had not been made aware of any halt in the discussions.
“That statement is appropriate because they are better negotiators than they are warriors,” he indicated in a brief call. “But they don’t let us know that.”
Furthermore, Trump noted he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address recent hostilities in Lebanon. He emphasized that no troops would be deployed to Beirut and stated that those who were heading there had already turned back.
“I had a very fruitful telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. There are no troops being sent to Beirut, and the troops that were heading there have already turned back,” Trump explained.
“Likewise, I had a very good call with Hezbollah through high-ranking members of Congress, and they agreed that all shooting would stop, meaning Israel would not attack them, and they would not attack Israel,” Trump concluded.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed the call on social media, asserting that Israel would retaliate if Hezbollah continued its attacks.
“Tonight, I spoke to President Trump and told him that if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and people, Israel will attack terrorist targets in Beirut,” he posted.
“Our position remains unchanged. In parallel, the Israel Defense Forces will continue its operations in southern Lebanon as planned,” he added.
This update follows a military operation by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which recently undertook “self-defense” measures against Iranian strongholds, citing aggressive actions from Iran, including the downing of a military drone.
CENTCOM reported intercepting an Iranian missile aimed at U.S. forces in Kuwait, but maintained that the existing ceasefire, which has been in place since early April, is to be upheld.
“U.S. Central Command remains vigilant and continues to protect U.S. forces from Iranian aggression while supporting the ongoing ceasefire,” the command stated.
With large-scale combat operations against Iran suspended, the U.S. Navy has initiated a blockade of Iranian ports, increasing economic pressure on the country.
Trump mentioned that this blockade would persist even if talks fall through.
“That doesn’t mean we’re going to start dropping bombs all over the place,” he clarified. “We will maintain the lockdown.”
“If they don’t want to talk, that’s fine with me. I think that’s fine. I don’t particularly want to talk either. We talk too much,” he added.
