Graham Platner Addresses Controversy at Maine Rally

At a campaign rally in Maine on Friday, Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner pushed back against mounting controversies surrounding his campaign, labeling the recent allegations as “politically motivated” and expressing gratitude to his supporters who have remained by his side during this turbulent time.

Platner addressed the ongoing scandal that threatens to derail his bid to unseat incumbent Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine). This includes resurfaced Reddit posts, claims from a former girlfriend, and revelations about sexually explicit messages exchanged during his marriage.

“Maine supported me when I faced backlash for things I shared about my personal journey through PTSD and recovery ten years ago,” he remarked to an audience in Bar Harbor. “You’re with me as every part of my past is scrutinized and weaponized.”

His comments represented one of the most direct responses he’s made to the damaging stories that have emerged, threatening to disrupt his campaign momentum.

In recent weeks, reports from various outlets, like the Wall Street Journal, have spotlighted allegations regarding explicit messages Platner allegedly sent to multiple women during his marriage, while a New York Times article brought forward accusations from past girlfriends of physical intimidation and personal issues.

While Platner denies the more severe charges, Friday’s event served a dual purpose: to address the allegations while also redirecting the narrative toward his economic policies aimed at supporting working-class residents in Maine grappling with inflation.

The controversy first ignited last year when old Reddit posts surfaced, which included comments on sensitive topics such as race and LGBTQ issues.

Platner later apologized for those posts, attributing them to a rough period in his life marked by military service and PTSD. He has also faced scrutiny over a tattoo resembling the Totenkopf symbol linked to Nazi Germany, which he received while intoxicated in Croatia in 2007. He later covered it up, insisting he was unaware of its symbolism at the time.

Critics have challenged this explanation, and further reports revealed that questions about his marital interactions, particularly sexually explicit messages, had emerged, leading to an internal resolution through counseling with his wife, Amy.

Recent allegations from ex-girlfriends claimed instances of physical aggression, including one account of him causing marks by holding someone too tightly and locking a partner in a room during an argument. Platner has categorically denied these claims, framing them as unfounded and politically motivated.

Scrutiny extends to his activity on Kik, a messaging app popular among younger users, with campaign officials confirming ownership of an active account that has been identified in news reports.

During the rally, Platner made a point of acknowledging his wife, Amy, sharing his sentiment that he wouldn’t be where he is today without her support.

Amy Gartner has publicly defended Platner, stating that their marriage has grown stronger despite challenges, and she views the release of their private issues as a betrayal.
