Silence from Female Dems on Graham Platner Controversy
Several prominent female Democrats, known for advocating for abuse victims, have notably refrained from commenting on the allegations surrounding Senate candidate Graham Platner from Maine. This silence comes as Minority Leader Chuck Schumer seeks to mitigate potential fallout ahead of the upcoming congressional elections.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Queens/Bronx), a self-identified survivor of sexual assault, has not addressed the serious allegations against the married Platner, which include claims of physical abuse towards his girlfriend, sexting with other women, and disturbing fantasies.
When approached about Platner, one of her colleagues hesitated, mentioning the need to “read this latest report carefully” before forming an opinion.
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) downplayed suggestions that party leaders should intervene in the turmoil regarding Platner, who has faced accusations of physically abusing his ex-girlfriend. “What will the referee do? That’s up to the people of Maine,” she remarked, following a recent party meeting where Platner was questioned about further allegations.
Senator Maisie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who had been outspoken during Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, expressed reluctance to comment on Platner, stating, “What Maine people think about these factors is largely up to voters to decide.”
Similarly, Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) indicated she would let Maine residents come to their own conclusions, adding, “I don’t care.” Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire) emphasized that inappropriate sexual conduct is not acceptable, but suggested it’s ultimately up to voters to determine the implications.
Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf critiqued the situation, saying political interests are overshadowing moral considerations. After Ocasio-Cortez’s office chose not to comment further, Platner referred to her as “the greatest hopscotch player in American politics.”
Schumer, who initially endorsed Governor Janet Mills for Senate, faced backlash for this choice. His understanding that Platner’s situation could potentially jeopardize the party’s finances is a concern, especially as polling shows him tied with Republican Senator Susan Collins.
This predicament is creating frustration among Democratic politicians. “Platner can’t withstand the scrutiny. It’s a classic case of ‘I told you so!’ for top strategists,” one Senate aide commented, indicating that there will likely be significant spending to aid Platner’s campaign moving forward.
There remains uncertainty about how the party will navigate this issue. The situation may compel them to either persuade Platner to withdraw or respond appropriately if more serious concerns emerge.
While Platner has denied the allegations, claiming they are politically charged, at least one Democratic senator has voiced concern. Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) stated, “These allegations are deeply concerning, and the people of Maine deserve answers. This kind of abuse should be taken very seriously.”
