Democrats have been striving to cut funding or, at the very least, hinder President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement and mass deportation initiatives. Unfortunately for them, these attempts have been unsuccessful once again.
Last summer, Republicans in Congress managed to bypass various challenges from their Democratic counterparts by using budget reconciliation to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This legislation included a substantial allocation of $75 billion for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) along with additional funding for various agencies under the Department of Homeland Security.
In the months following this decision, the struggle for immigration policy and funding escalated. Democrats partially shut down DHS for 75 days but eventually capitulated, resulting in fierce negotiations to secure funding after what became the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
This past Tuesday, Democrats encountered another noteworthy setback.
After the Senate approved the bill with a 52-47 vote, it moved to the House. Ahead of the House vote, the White House declared that the “Safe America Act ends Democratic gamesmanship by fully funding ICE and the Border Patrol during President Trump’s administration. It aims to uphold border security, tackle human trafficking, curb the influx of harmful drugs, dismantle criminal cartels, and ensure the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.”
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized the necessity of Congress passing the Safer America Act promptly to finance these essential services fully. He noted, “It’s been over 100 days since Congressional Democrats defunded ICE and the Border Patrol in a drastic move aimed at shielding illegal immigrants, including those guilty of violent crimes, which undermines President Trump’s successful border security measures.”
Opposing the bill, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries voiced his frustrations, saying, “As if limiting access to healthcare and nutritional support in ‘The Ugly Bill’ wasn’t sufficient, Republicans have returned to boost ICE and Trump’s mass deportation efforts with an additional $70 billion, all without any oversight or accountability.”
Despite Jeffries’ objections, the Safer America Act passed with a 214-212 party-line vote.
This funding initiative allocates an extra $38 billion to ICE, $26 billion to Customs and Border Protection, and $5 billion to DHS through September 2029.
After the vote, House Speaker Mike Johnson remarked that Democrats gained nothing through their reckless attempts to revert immigration policy to open borders. He claimed, “Everything Democrats have achieved during the shutdown only reminds the American public of their support for keeping illegal criminals in our communities—policies the public has repeatedly rejected.”
President Trump is expected to sign the Secure America Act on Wednesday in the Oval Office.
