Red Sox executive Sam Kennedy describes the 2026 season as 'shameful'

Frustration Within the Red Sox Organization

Red Sox president Sam Kennedy has expressed disappointment regarding the team’s current season.

In a recent interview with WEEI, Kennedy didn’t hold back, labeling this season “embarrassing and unacceptable.” He emphasized, “There’s no way to surface that. It was terrible, especially considering our goal to build on last year’s performance. It’s been incredibly frustrating, and I want to be the first to admit that. It’s everyone’s responsibility, and we need to improve.”

As of Thursday, the Red Sox found themselves at the bottom of the AL East with a record of 27-39, trailing by five and a half games for the final wild-card spot.

Struggling throughout the season, the organization decided to fire manager Alex Cora along with four coaching staff members in hopes of reviving the team’s performance.

The dismissals included hitting coach Peter Fatze, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, third base coach Kyle Hudson, and assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson.

Chad Tracy stepped in as interim manager, but significant changes in performance have yet to materialize.

Following the unsuccessful coaching changes, scrutiny has turned to Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow.

However, Kennedy defended Breslow, stating he’s “working harder than anyone to restore the team’s success.” He added, “I completely understand the concerns regarding Craig’s job security, but any potential changes there aren’t even up for discussion.”

With the trade deadline approaching on August 3, Kennedy indicated that the team may consider moving various players unless there’s noticeable improvement soon.

“Currently, there’s extensive discussion about how to turn things around, assessing all areas of the roster and player personnel. Brace and his team are on that,” Kennedy explained. “But honestly, if things don’t change drastically, we might need to shift from our original plans. We feel a responsibility to do so.”
