Extreme Leftists Set Fire to Tesla, Confront Police at G7 Meeting in Geneva

Protests Erupt in Geneva Ahead of G7 Summit

On Sunday, far-left activists created turmoil in Geneva, engaging in clashes with law enforcement, setting fires, and damaging businesses. This upheaval coincided with President Donald Trump’s upcoming meeting with G7 leaders set for Monday.

As the heads of significant global economies prepared for their summit in Evian, France, leftist protesters took to the streets in nearby Geneva, seizing the moment to express their dissent.

The French government had prohibited demonstrations against the G7 within its territories, compelling protests to be organized around 50 kilometers away from the summit venue.

Authorities anticipated around 50,000 protesters in Switzerland, while deploying 7,000 police officers to curb the kind of violence that typified previous anti-government demonstrations related to G7 meetings.

Reports indicated that tensions escalated around 5 PM local time, leading to acts of vandalism including the destruction of a Tesla and the smashing of a bank’s windows. Demonstrators confronted police, wielding iron bars, bicycles, and wooden sticks.

Furthermore, some individuals reportedly invaded construction sites, using materials as makeshift weapons against law enforcement.

In response, police utilized tear gas and water cannons, aiming to quell the more aggressive factions among the protesters.

Historically, G7 meetings have been magnets for anti-capitalist protests, much like the violent encounter during the 2001 summit in Genoa, where many faced injuries, and one protester, Carlo Giuliani, was tragically killed by police.

Looking back, previous gatherings, including the 2003 meeting in Evian, witnessed significant violence, prompting many local businesses to fortify their storefronts in anticipation of trouble during the current events.

While the underlying cause of the protests is framed as a response to international capitalism, a Swiss newspaper noted that various leftist groups, including radical feminists, trade unionists, and pro-Palestinian activists, joined the demonstrations, showcasing a broad coalition of dissenters.
