Elon Musk Promises to Take Legal Steps Against German Public Media

Tesla’s Musk Threatens Legal Action Against German Broadcaster ZDF

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has announced plans to sue German public broadcaster ZDF over comments implying he used X’s platform to incite rioters in Belfast to “hunt migrants.” This follows a particularly violent incident involving a Sudanese asylum seeker.

ZDF, one of Germany’s publicly funded networks, finds itself in a challenging situation following Musk’s allegations.

During a recent broadcast of their show Today Live, ZDF host Christina v Ungern Sternberg discussed the significant role social media played in the rioting that occurred in Northern Ireland. She described the event as a “brutal attempted murder in Belfast,” stating that a viral video led to a mob hunting down migrants, motivated by right-wing extremist Tommy Robinson and Musk.

However, ZDF did not provide any proof that Musk or Robinson actually incited violence. In fact, the program showed Robinson’s post encouraging protesters to remain “peaceful” and “respectful.”

Over the weekend, protests escalated into violence, with reports indicating that some protesters shared lists targeting migrant settlements. Yet, authorities made no connection between these actions and comments made by Musk or Robinson.

In response to the allegations made on Monday, Musk took to his platform to declare, “Legal action is being taken against ZDF’s outrageous lies.” He emphasized a commitment to uncovering the individual responsible for the “egregious lie.”

After Musk’s reaction, ZDF adjusted its broadcast, removing the portions that implicated him, citing “legal reasons” for the changes.

The German broadcaster has drawn criticism within Germany, with NDR editor Sebastian Eberle stating, “We cannot and must not work like this. This is completely unacceptable.”

Additionally, Anna Schneider, a chief reporter at the German newspaper die welt, expressed concern that ZDF was neglecting the real causes behind the riots, which she believes stem from the violent activities taking place on the streets, rather than social media influencers.

Schneider pointed out that the ongoing debate highlights misguided immigration policies that have prioritized moral considerations over effective control, creating an atmosphere of insecurity for the public.

This isn’t the first time ZDF has faced scrutiny over its reporting standards. Earlier this year, they issued an apology for airing a misleading AI-generated video suggesting an immigrant family was arrested by U.S. customs officials.

Previously, the network faced backlash when a correspondent inaccurately accused a U.S. activist of endorsing violence against homosexuals, a claim that led to significant fallout.
