Man Dies After Being Ejected from Out-of-Control Horse-Drawn Carriage in NYC

Tragic Accident in Central Park

An 18-year-old was fatally injured in an incident involving a carriage horse in Central Park on Wednesday. Reports indicate that the incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m., when a horse, startled for reasons not yet clear, bolted while pulling a carriage close to Tavern on the Green.

The young man, who was thrown from the carriage, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries.

Video footage obtained shows the horse taking off, with the carriage tipping over as it approached another horse-drawn carriage. It’s quite alarming to see how quickly things escalated.

As the young man and his family were preparing to return to their carriage, a horse named Sampson suddenly ran off. This seems so chaotic, and it makes you wonder what exactly caused the horse to panic.

Authorities are investigating the situation. A nonprofit organization, Central Park Conservancy, has identified the victim as Romanchi Mahajan.

Alexander Kemp, from the Transportation Workers Union Local 100, stated that the driver wasn’t in the carriage during the incident, as they were reportedly taking photos of the passengers. That raises some questions about what safety protocols were in place.

Kemp mentioned that the horse had only been in the park for about six weeks before the incident occurred, and that the carriage ended up caught in the wheel of another carriage, tipping over while the victim was still inside. It was likely alarming for those nearby, especially with children present.

Following the tragic news, Kemp expressed his shock over the situation, stressing the need for improved safety measures within the park—there seems to be a growing concern regarding safety for various types of vehicles, including horse-drawn carriages.

Reports indicate that the young man suffered a head injury when he fell from the carriage onto the pavement. The owner of the carriage has reportedly suspended the driver indefinitely and plans to retire the horse, which seems to have emerged from the incident unharmed.

Kemp emphasized that drivers should never leave their carriages during rides and called for a detailed investigation. He also advocated for enhanced training, stricter testing requirements, and better guidelines for introducing new horses to the operation. It’s sobering to think that while countless rides have taken place without issues, there’s still a need for preventive measures to safeguard everyone involved.
