President Donald Trump announced on Friday that recent vandalism has affected a newly renovated reflecting pool in Washington, D.C., and police are looking into the matter.
“We’ve worked hard to clean, revamp, and enhance 45 monuments, 28 statues, and 22 fountains in Washington, D.C.,” he remarked. “The state of our nation’s capital has substantially improved. When I took office, crime was everywhere, and now it feels like Washington, D.C. is among the safest cities in the United States,” he added in a post on Truth Social.
“However, there are serious problems with vandalism occurring at the beautiful reflecting pool situated between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument,” Trump said.
“Just like the damage done to the lawn beside the pool three days ago, the inside surface, which had just been installed, has also faced significant destruction. It’s similar to the chemicals used on the National Mall; they tried to ruin our beautiful work here as well. A reporter from ABC, Jonathan Karl, was spotted putting his hand into the pool and attempting to peel off the rubber surface,” Trump stated.
“Luckily, 75 percent of the algae is gone, and conditions should fully improve soon. The area that was damaged is actually quite small and will be fixed early next week. It’s unfortunate to see someone, possibly a radical leftist, feeling free to do this. Law enforcement is on the case and expects to get to the bottom of it shortly. Thanks for your attention to this issue.”
In a video shared on Friday afternoon by reporter Emily Miller, it was reported that authorities arrested a man who allegedly jumped into the reflecting pool and removed a large patch of sealant.
Her footage showed law enforcement at the scene alongside what looked to be the torn blue sealant. She noted that personnel from the National Park Service were present to witness the incident and were there to clean up the dead algae.
Additionally, Miller mentioned in another video that a man, who had allegedly stolen a hose from an NPS officer at the scene, was arrested. It remains unclear if this individual, dressed in cycling gear, was the same person who stripped the sealant.
According to reports, the news concerning the reflecting pool emerged after the numbers “86 47” were found carved into the lawn of the National Mall ahead of a UFC event at the White House.
“The number ’86’ is commonly interpreted as a slang term for removing or deleting something, while ’47’ points to Trump, the 47th president of the United States,” the article suggested.
It’s worth mentioning that President Trump has faced three assassination attempts in recent years.
On the beautification initiative he started in Washington, D.C., particularly ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum explained that the reflecting pool was leaking an astonishing 45,000 gallons of water each day under the previous administration, which had allocated $38 million for repairs.
“We had to ensure the water flowed continuously to keep everything balanced. All of that will be managed because we have a talented builder in President Trump. He’s the only person in office who has completed such intricate construction projects. He truly appreciates construction workers, understands the craft, and is knowledgeable about these types of projects,” he concluded.
