Popular boating spots on the Potomac and Anacostia rivers will be closed to recreational boaters and kayakers over the Fourth of July weekend, according to an announcement from the U.S. Coast Guard. This has caused quite a stir among water lovers.
Under a recommendation issued on June 16, the Coast Guard plans to restrict access to the Potomac River from the morning of July 2 until the morning of July 5. The closure will extend from the Key Bridge to about 200 yards south of the 14th Street Bridge as part of heightened security measures for an extensive fireworks display celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, which President Trump promised will be grand.
While commercial ferries and dinner cruises can navigate some parts of the restricted area at specific times, they’ll be unable to operate during the morning of July 3 or from noon to midnight on Independence Day.
The Anacostia River near the Frederick Douglass Bridge will also be closed on July 4.
This announcement has left many boaters feeling lost.
For years, families would plan their outings months in advance, with the holiday turning the Potomac River into a lively gathering for thousands eager to watch the fireworks. It was always a spectacle filled with fellowship, music, and a vivid display of red, white, and blue.
One social media user expressed frustration, stating, “These closures are so unreasonable.” Another said, “That’s not good anymore.” A first-time boater shared disappointment, lamenting, “This was literally the plan for this year.”
But don’t think you can quietly ignore these restrictions. Those caught in the limited areas could face civil fines as hefty as $11,162, as per the Coast Guard’s warning.
The imposed restrictions are part of extensive security measures linked to President Trump’s anticipated Fourth of July celebrations at landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, where he promises to end the festivities with an unmatched fireworks show.
This event will also affect air travel. For instance, the Washington Metropolitan Area Airports Authority has declared that there won’t be any takeoffs or landings at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after noon on July 4.
Boaters should also anticipate restrictions in New York. Macy’s annual fireworks display will again occur on both the lower East River and the lower Hudson River, with the Coast Guard implementing temporary waterway restrictions and safety zones from July 1 to July 9.
The retailer noted that this dual river show would unite more communities than ever before, commemorating not just America’s 250th anniversary but also Macy’s 50 years of Fourth of July fireworks displays.
