Discovery of Human Skull Fragment on California Beach
A woman from Orange County stumbled upon a startling find while walking on the beach. Katherine Kinnison, a resident of San Clemente, discovered a part of a human skull in the sand near Linda Lane Beach on Wednesday.
Initially mistaking it for an animal part, she quickly realized what she had found was the lower half of a jawbone with four teeth still attached. “I thought, ‘Don’t touch it, let’s go tell someone,’” Kinnison recounted her reaction.
Having walked the beach countless times, Kinnison admitted this was “the most unique thing” she had ever encountered. She mentioned that in the past, she had found seal bones and fish vertebrae, but this was different.
Kinnison went on to notify a local lifeguard, who then contacted the sheriff’s office. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the skull fragments are now in the hands of the coroner, who is collaborating with the Native American Heritage Commission.
Sgt. Lisbeth Gwisdalla clarified that the fragments could be linked to a Native American heritage tradition, noting that they do not suspect any foul play.
Kinnison speculated that recent high tides and sand replenishment might have uncovered the jawbone. The area where she found it was historically associated with the Achahemen Nation and the Juanyo Band of Mission Indians.
The Native American Heritage Commission has been contacted for further insights regarding the find.
