Homeowner Shoots Alleged Burglar in Memphis

Police in Memphis responded to a break-in and shooting at the Greenbrook Apartments on West Quailbrook Cove on Tuesday afternoon. According to local reports, a homeowner returned home around 3:15 p.m. only to find a masked intruder attempting to steal a television.

The homeowner claimed he instructed the suspect to leave, but as the burglar turned and reached into a bag, the homeowner felt he had no choice. He pulled out a gun and shot the intruder twice, as reported by the police.

The alleged burglar fled the apartment, heading west toward Greenbrook Bend. Interestingly, it was reported that as he ran away, he fired two shots back at the homeowner, though the homeowner said the suspect eventually stumbled, dropped his belongings, but then got back up and continued fleeing.

Authorities later found a man injured in the 6400 block of Macon Road, according to police, and he was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.

In a curious twist, police also returned several items to the homeowner’s wife, including a white PlayStation 5 and various pairs of sneakers, all reportedly belonging to the couple.

Community reactions appeared largely supportive of the homeowner’s actions. Comments on social media reflected a range of opinions. Some praised the homeowner, stating things like, “Great job, homeowner,” while others expressed a mix of disbelief and concern over the break-in occurring in broad daylight. A few users even noted the implications of the incident as a sign of broader system failures in community safety.

This incident seems to highlight the ongoing debates about self-defense and personal safety in today’s society.
