Now, the franchise is looking at the bigger picture of their roster. A primary focus is LeBron James, who remains one of the most sought-after unrestricted free agents in the league.

As James approaches his 42nd birthday in December, the Lakers have begun talks on a new deal that would see him return for his 24th NBA season, potentially extending his legacy in Los Angeles.

While James hasn’t formally declared if he will play another season, most insiders don’t anticipate his retirement just yet; they expect he’ll be on the court for at least one more year. The Lakers are eager to have him in their lineup for a ninth consecutive season, which would mark his longest uninterrupted stint with the team.

Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ president of basketball operations, expressed deep admiration for James, stating, “I’ve never seen a player show such respect for the game,” highlighting the contributions James has made to the organization.

Pelinka added that the priority is to give James the space to weigh his options concerning his future. He acknowledged that many teams would want James on their roster, emphasizing his significant impact on the game.

Even with Reeves’ lucrative new contract, which includes a pay raise of over $27 million, it won’t alter the Lakers’ negotiations with James. Their strategy involved utilizing the $20.9 million cap hold on Reeves, allowing for flexibility during offseason adjustments while anticipating Reeves would likely seek a higher salary after opting out of his contract for the 2026-27 season.

James’ unique situation has always been a consideration. Given his ongoing influence in the league, speculations suggest he might have to accept a pay cut next season from his impressive $52 million salary.

Whether he stays with the Lakers, who can offer him a more competitive salary than other teams, or decides to join a different franchise, remains uncertain. Nonetheless, if James aims to be part of a winning team, a pay cut seems inevitable.

Industry experts suggest that a one-year deal around $30 million could be feasible. This would provide the Lakers with enough cap space to enhance their roster. They certainly have the talent to compete with the top teams in the Western Conference.
