The Final Season of bear and a Tribute to Rob Reiner
The fifth and final season of bear was notable for several reasons, particularly for having to carry on without Rob Reiner, a prominent figure in Season 4.
Tragically, Reiner and his wife Michele were discovered dead in their home in December 2025. Production for Season 5 began in early 2026, which meant Reiner and his character, Albert Schnur, didn’t physically appear in the last eight episodes.
Even with Reiner’s absence casting a shadow, bear found a heartfelt way to honor him, creatively weaving Albert into the storyline and nodding to some of his most cherished work.
So, how exactly does bear address Reiner’s passing in Season 5? And what role does Albert play in the final episode? If you’re still with me, keep reading for a few mild spoilers regarding Season 5.
How Will bear Honor Rob Reiner? Why Didn’t Albert Participate?
If you need to jog your memory, Evra struggled with self-confidence in Season 3 while in Cooking School. By Season 4, he was inspired by the beef aisle and decided to “create opportunities,” reaching out to Albert, a consultant with experience ranging from Fortune 500 companies to local laundromats. Throughout that season, Evra learned from Albert and came up with an ambitious plan: expanding The Bear into a mini-franchise.
Albert believed that if the team took their time, maintained a family vibe, and focused on quality, they could outshine even Arby’s. In the climax of Season 4, the Sandwich Window team pitched three new locations to Carmy and welcomed Albert as a sort of “Robert Duvall-like consigliere” akin to the character in The Godfather.
It seems Albert was intended to have a significant part in Season 5 soon after Season 4 wrapped. However, with Reiner’s passing, he only appeared through phone conversations with Evra. At one point, Evra phones Albert for advice, saying, “Albert, I’m going to talk to Carmy this afternoon. Please help me out… ‘Just make it easier for him to say yes. Keep it simple. Don’t be intimidated by his blue eyes. Stop repeating yourself.’ Oh, right. Sorry. Yes, absolutely. Good luck with that.”
Albert remains a recurring mention throughout the season, with the computer nudging Uncle Jimmy to collaborate with him to explore franchising. Eventually, the finale sees Evra and his team scouting a new franchise location. During this exploration, Evra calls Albert, proclaiming the location as “perfect” and asking if there’s anything else they can do. Although his request was unmet, it was touching when Evra responded with “As you wish,” a reference to Reiner’s beloved film, The Princess Bride.
As noted in my Season 4 coverage, Reiner was perfectly cast in bear. Despite the presence of big names like Jamie Lee Curtis and Bob Odenkirk, he quickly embodied his character, making it hard for audiences to separate him from the role.
His genuine charm, upbeat demeanor, and warm personality made him instantly relatable, helping viewers and Evra trust him right away. It was uplifting to see someone genuinely supportive of Evra’s journey. Reiner was truly one of bear’s best guest stars and embodied the heart of the series.
In an interview, White described Reiner as “incredibly generous” and commended his kindness and dedication. He reflected on how fortunate he felt to work with someone who lived up to the hero-like image often disappointingly seen in the industry.
“Sometimes when you meet heroes like that, you get disappointed and wish you had never met them. And with Rob, it was quite the opposite. He responded brilliantly.”

Gibson, who shared many scenes with Reiner, shared that all their time together was incredibly fun, expressing a bittersweet joy at how well they clicked. He acknowledged the emotional weight of returning for Season 5 without Reiner, noting how it changed the trajectory of the story.
Although Reiner’s presence will be sorely missed, his impact lives on in the works he helped create and the people he inspired, notably through the thoughtful tribute in the final season of bear.
