Tragic Murder of Postal Worker in North Carolina

A North Carolina postal worker, a mother of two, was murdered while on duty, leaving her children orphaned just months after her husband lost his life in a car crash.

Brandi Reynolds, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service, was allegedly abducted and killed by William Craig Durham on Friday in Hays, approximately 260 miles west of Raleigh, as reported by the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation.

The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 4:16 p.m. from a witness who reported seeing an armed man in a gray Nissan Altima threatening Reynolds, followed by multiple gunshots. Police arrived shortly thereafter, only to find Reynolds deceased at the scene.

Durham, 56, has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. A warrant describes him as having moved Reynolds without her consent. He was taken into custody and is currently in the Wilkes County Jail.

During a court appearance on Monday, Reynolds’ family expressed their concerns, noting that Durham had previously made threats against her and was suspected of breaking into her home. They requested that bail be denied due to worries for Reynolds’ daughters, which the judge approved.

Reynolds and her two children had already experienced tremendous loss when her husband, Brent, died in a car accident just two days before Christmas. Authorities reported that Brent, 35, was not wearing a seatbelt when his vehicle crashed and flipped after hitting a tree in Wilkes County on December 23, 2025. The North Carolina Highway Patrol pronounced him dead at the scene.

After his death, Brandi shared a photo of her daughters on Facebook, expressing that they were her reason for getting up each day. “I love these kids,” she had written.

The rural community where Brandi worked as a mail carrier is in shock. One resident, Julie Smith, remarked, “No, that’s not my Brandi. That’s not my mail carrier.” She expressed deep sympathy for the family, describing Brandi as an outgoing and hardworking individual who was always punctual.

Residents shared their grief, stating they will miss seeing her car come down the driveway. The investigation into Reynolds’ murder continues, involving multiple agencies including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
