Venezuela earthquake survivor found alive after 8 days trapped in debris

Rescue from the Rubble: A Survival Story in Venezuela

A 43-year-old security guard was miraculously pulled from the debris of a shopping center in Venezuela on Thursday, having survived eight days trapped under rubble following twin earthquakes that claimed over 2,200 lives. Hernan Alberto Gil Flores was discovered in the basement of the Galerias Playa Grande shopping center, where he had been stuck since the quake hit on June 24.

Interestingly, when rescuers found him, he requested that they not tell his wife about his survival, fearing he might not make it. This poignant detail was shared by Minial Collado, a rescue worker from Costa Rica, in an interview with the Associated Press.

Rescue teams had initially detected signs of life from Gil Flores over the weekend, and they worked tirelessly amidst aftershocks and dangerous conditions to reach him. The first earthquake had happened while he was on duty at night; astonishingly, his small security booth was one of the few structures that remained standing, allowing him to evade the falling debris.

In a race against time, rescuers utilized telescopic cameras for communication and managed to send water and nutrients through a narrow mineshaft to help sustain him as they coordinated his rescue.

His wife, Gusvimar Gonzalez, expressed her emotional rollercoaster, saying that hearing of her husband’s survival felt like a beam of light cutting through their despair. The couple has two children, aged 8 and 10.

Video footage captured the moment when Gil Flores was carried out on a stretcher by the rescue workers, who were greeted with cheers from a supportive crowd. The operation involved not only local firefighters but also search and rescue teams from various countries, including Chile, the U.S., and Portugal.

The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, devastated northern Venezuela, flattening shopping centers and destroying tens of thousands of buildings, leading to the staggering loss of life and injuries affecting over 11,000 people.

The rescue of Gil Flores marked a rare moment of hope amid the overwhelming destruction. Just days before his rescue, a brave 2-year-old boy was saved after being trapped for six days.

In another heartwarming moment, the U.S. State Department released a video of a search team rescuing a 9-month-old baby and her mother from a collapsed structure, both unharmed except for minor injuries.

To assist in the disaster response, the U.S. government has mobilized $150 million in humanitarian aid for Venezuela.
