Rep. Chuck Edwards claims NC Gov Stein ignored the Trump-supported Great American State Fair

North Carolina’s Decision to Boycott the Great American State Fair Draws Criticism

U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards, a Republican from North Carolina, has criticized the state’s choice to boycott the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C. He accuses Democratic Governor Josh Stein of mixing politics with celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.

Edwards expressed disappointment over the governor’s decision not to sponsor a booth for North Carolina, dismissing the explanation of budget issues. “I think it’s incredibly unfortunate that the governor chose not to send a delegation from North Carolina to celebrate such a momentous occasion and show patriotism,” he remarked in a recent interview. “But I know a lot of North Carolinians back home. I know the people in my district are patriots, and they will definitely celebrate,” he added.

The state’s government opted out of the trade show, which runs on the National Mall for 16 days until July 10, citing financial limitations. Each state has the chance to showcase its culture, with different themes every day highlighting American history.

A spokesperson from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources stated that the state is focusing its limited resources on 250 events across North Carolina, including a July 4th celebration at the State Capitol in Raleigh.

When asked about these budgetary concerns, Edwards pushed back, saying, “I don’t believe in that at all. I think this is a political statement.”

North Carolina isn’t alone in opting out; other blue states such as Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington have also decided not to participate. The fair is organized by the Trump-aligned group, Freedom 250, and some Democratic governors, including those from Pennsylvania and Oregon, expressed worries over potential partisanship at the event.

Despite North Carolina’s absence, some private sponsors have stepped in to fund a booth. There was indeed some controversy surrounding the exhibit after it initially displayed several Confederate flags, which were later removed by fair organizers. Governor Stein remarked on this issue, arguing that these symbols don’t represent the state he loves and advocating for unity during the anniversary celebration.

While it’s true that North Carolina joined the Confederacy during the Civil War, it’s interesting to note that the Confederate flag itself was never part of the Southern state flag’s design.
