Authorities in the state of Sonora, on Mexico's northern border, announced on Wednesday that the body of Alonia Wilson, a local Cucapá Indian leader, had been found.

The Sonora state prosecutor's office is investigating those involved in Wilson's death and said an initial investigation points to a motive related to her close friends, family and acquaintances.
Prosecutors said they ruled out Wilson's “political or similar activities” as a motive. They did not disclose the cause of death.

In 2020, the Cocopa Indian Tribe complained that a border wall would be built on their land, cutting off access for tribal members in Mexico.
