A transgender woman held in a male detention center on Rikers Island is suing New York City for $22 million, alleging she was assaulted and harassed.
Ali Miles, also known as Dylan, was held at Rikers Island from June 14, 2022 to July of the same year. She was later transferred to Arizona.
Miles was indicted in June 2022 on numerous charges, including felony-level stalking, false reporting of a crime, and aggravated harassment.
Miles is suing the New York City Department of Corrections, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, and several individuals, alleging rape, physical assault, and harassment she suffered while in prison.

The lawsuit cites the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, which was designed to alleviate and eliminate rape incidents in correctional facilities.
Lawsuit documents filed in August 2023 and obtained by FOX News Digital on Saturday confirm that Miles was born biologically male but identifies as a transgender woman.
“Miles wears women's clothing and exhibits a female gender in every outward appearance,” the complaint states.
According to the complaint, Miles was placed in a male-only residence “despite her objections, court orders, and her requests to live with a woman.” Miles' attorneys also claim the defendants “delayed and denied her access to medical care.”

“Defendant's misconduct was a direct result of: [Rikers’] Discrimination and deliberate indifference towards transgender people is widespread. ”
Miles' lawyers also argued that New York authorities “ignored her repeated pleas for help and to protect her from threats and sexual assault.”

According to the complaint, the corrections officer told Miles, “We don't do transgender stuff here,” which the complaint alleges is a violation of civil rights law.
