Fox's first appearance: Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) said after a new report from the Congressional Budget Office revealed that the number exceeded the population of two states in Missouri last year. They are warning of mass “flights” at the border. The largest cities combined.
In a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Hawley said a new CBO report found a record 860,000 illegal immigrants evaded Border Patrol agents in fiscal year 2023. I quoted the book.
“The number of these 'runaways' exceeds the population of Missouri's two largest cities, Kansas City and St. Louis, combined,” Hawley said. “At the very least, you owe the American people full transparency about what your department knows about illegal immigrants who enter our country unstopped and untraced.”

CBO report We found that DHS had not released formal estimates for FY23, but Mayorkas himself had testified that there were more than 600,000 escapes. He also cited media reports that said the number exceeded 770,000.
“To account for the second group, those who crossed the border but were not observed or detected by CBP personnel, CBO, following testimony from the Secretary, increased the estimate of 750,000 by 15 percent (or 11 percent) 20,000 people) to 860,000. Border Patrol officials said the estimate likely underestimated these people by 10 to 20 percent,” the report said.
The holiday comes amid a record fiscal year in which more than 2.4 million migrants were encountered. Escapes are of particular concern to authorities because they are likely to hide something from authorities, such as a criminal conviction. Jason Owens, the current head of the Border Patrol, told lawmakers last year of his concerns about the flight.

“If someone is willing to risk themselves in a remote and extremely dangerous situation to evade capture, we need to ask ourselves why. What makes them willing to take that risk? “That's the concern for me,” he said. “The other thing that bothers me is that I don't know who the person is. I don't know where they're coming from. I don't know what their intentions are. “Unknown represents risk, threat. That's a big concern for anyone wearing this uniform.”
Hawley says the crisis has worsened under Mayorkas' leadership.
“The number of annual vacations has increased dramatically under your watch, up from nearly 600,000 in fiscal year 2022 and more than double from 389,515 in fiscal year 2021.” he says. “Overall, nearly 2 million illegal immigrants successfully evaded Border Patrol authorities under the Biden administration.”
He also cited reports of more than 302,000 migrant encounters in December, itself a new record.

“These unprecedented numbers highlight the need for full transparency about the department's own narrative of the southern border crisis,” he said.
He asked DHS to corroborate CBO's estimates, explain how fugitive estimates are calculated, and how many terrorist suspects, violent criminals, and other felons they include. We are asking them to provide a methodology for this.
DHS has previously said the leave has been a problem for multiple administrations, blaming it on a “broken” immigration system that needs reform and funding from Congress. The administration is seeking more than $14 billion in border funding, including technology and staffing costs at the border. That funding is currently being held up by Republican demands for restrictions on asylum and parole.
DHS is experiencing high levels of anxiety, with investments in technology and talent that it has been able to make to date to exceed 70% in 2021, an average percentage that was the same as under the Trump administration. In contrast, under the Trump administration, it was about 35%. 2002-2004.
The agency says these investments also increase awareness of who is infiltrating, even if they are not caught.

“Thanks to the investments this Congress has made to the Border Patrol and CBP as a whole, we have more situational awareness than ever before,” then-Border Patrol Commissioner Raul Ortiz said last March. .
Fox News reported Tuesday that there have been more than 96,000 known vacations so far in 2024, an average of 800 a day.
