George Carlin’s estate recently filed a lawsuit against the Dudessy podcast over an artificial intelligence-generated stand-up comedy special that featured the late comedian’s likeness.
Since then, lawsuit was filed and the special “George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead” was removed from YouTube. The complaint alleged that the introductory narration for “Dudesee” stated that the special was generated by an AI that incorporated “50 years of Carlin’s original stand-up comedy routines.”
“Accordingly, Defendants used thousands of hours of George Carlin’s original copyrighted routines to fabricate a resemblance to Carlin’s voice and to produce Carlin’s stand-up comedy routines. “He admitted that he entered the information into the AI machine he was operating,” the complaint states.
According to the complaint, the video began with the words, “I listened to all of George Carlin’s content and did my best to imitate his voice, rhythm, demeanor, and subjects that I believe would interest him today.” .
The estate claimed that the special was “detrimental to Carlin’s reputation, his legacy, and the value of his true work.” The lawsuit said the AI-generated comedy routine was a “bastardization of Carlin’s true work and his legacy.”
The lawsuit was also filed against comedian Will Sasso and podcaster Chad Krutgen.
