Authorities in the Mexican border state of Coahuila are investigating the murders of two migrants whose bodies were found inside a house set on fire.
The incident occurred in the border city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, just south of Eagle Pass, Texas. Early Monday morning, officers responded to a call of shots fired in the Periodista area, according to information provided to Breitbart Texas by state authorities. When police arrived, they found the house fully ablaze and called in city firefighters to put out the fire.
When firefighters extinguished the fire, they discovered the charred bodies of two victims, believed to be immigrants. The identities of the migrants have not been disclosed. The motive for the murder and subsequent arson has not been determined. However, authorities are interviewing a person believed to be the suspect who suffered burns to his body.
The Periodista area is located near the Rio Grande River and currently has a strong presence of organized crime members who control all human trafficking and drug trafficking activities. The area is considered a hotspot for violence in the area.
The killings of the two migrants come at a time when Piedras Negras has become one of the main corridors used by smugglers to illegally sneak record numbers of migrants into Texas to apply for asylum. This record number has created significant political tension between the Biden administration and various US states that oppose the ongoing border crisis.
