Murder suspect in Georgia state trooper car chase death denied bond

A judge on Sunday denied bail for a man charged with murder in the death of a Georgia state trooper during a vehicle pursuit.

Cruiser Jimmy Senesker left Interstate 85 on January 28 and crashed into an embankment in Suwanee, a suburb north of Atlanta, killing him. According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, officers pursued Senesker after he attempted to stop the fleeing motorcycle for a traffic violation.

The department announced Friday that authorities arrested Gerson Ayala Rodriguez and charged him with felony murder, first-degree murder, fleeing and attempting to elude and reckless driving.

It was not immediately clear whether Rodriguez has hired an attorney. He called the Atlanta public defender’s office Sunday but did not immediately receive a response.

According to an accident report reviewed by WXIA-TV, the motorcycle driven by Rodriguez “split” two lanes of traffic and fled, and Senescal swerved to avoid other vehicles during the pursuit. He veered off the road and down an embankment, where his car struck a tree and rocks in a drainage ditch. Senesker was taken to a suburban hospital, where he died.

In a statement on social media, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called the arrest “a step toward justice for one of Georgia’s fallen heroes.”

In October 2021, Senesker was credited with saving a man’s life after he drove off an Atlanta bridge and fell approximately 50 feet (15 meters) onto the railroad tracks below. Senesker drove through a locked gate and approached the man, administering first aid.

Mr. Senesker had been working for the Ministry of Public Safety since January 2023 and graduated from the police academy in September.
