Democratic presidential candidate announces campaign layoffs, vows to remain in race: ‘really tough day’

Democratic Party presidential candidate Dean Phillips announced Friday that he will have to lay off “a large number” of his campaign staff as he faces difficulties raising enough money to run his campaign the way he wants. , said he would remain in the White House race.

“I made a promise to them and I will keep it,” he continued. “I’m not giving up. I’m going to keep going. I’m voting in 43 states. Our country is desperate for change.”

“We can have hope again, we can be optimistic again, we can celebrate America again. But we have to do it together.”

“I’m going to continue on this journey as long as you guys want me to continue on this journey,” Phillips told supporters in a video.

Phillips’ video included repeated appeals for financial support for his campaign, which has struggled in recent weeks as incumbent President Biden tightens his grip on Democratic voters.

“I love you all. Thank you for keeping the faith,” he said. “Team Dean, please join us, we can do it.”

Mr. Phillips announced last October that he would enter the 2024 White House race as the primary challenger to Mr. Biden in the Democratic primary, but so far only a handful of key candidates have been able to vote early. He has an uphill battle against the president in the state.

In last month’s New Hampshire Democratic primary, Phillips received 20% of the vote as a write-in candidate, compared to 64% for Biden. In the South Carolina Democratic primary earlier this month, Phillips lost to Biden, who received 96% of the vote. Mr Phillips failed to clear the 2% approval rating in the same election, and Marianne Williamson, who ended her campaign last week, also came out on top.

Phillips is scheduled to face Biden again this month in the Michigan Democratic primary on February 27th.

“Anybody with their eyes open can see what’s going on,” Phillips said of Biden. “I think it’s unfortunate. I think it’s embarrassing. And I think it’s sad. And for a president who was able to solidify the tradition and hand over the torch and do what’s best for the country. , I think this is shameful. This is not just about him.'”

”[W]We all see his speech and decline with our own eyes. He’s an 81-year-old man,” Phillips said, adding that Biden would serve as president until 2029 if re-elected.
