Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that President Joe Biden needs a “backbone” to enforce immigration laws at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“If you look at border governors, you’ve managed to send tens of thousands of immigrants into cities like New York and Chicago and get blue states to pay attention to the immigration crisis,” anchor Dana Bash said. President Biden is considering executive action to limit asylum claims for immigrants who cross the border illegally. Do you support it?”
“That’s why no, because if you grant asylum to immigrants after they cross the border illegally, you’re allowing illegal immigration, and that creates chaos,” Abbott said. But listen to what you said, he said he was considering administrative action. Know this, the president said a few weeks ago that Congress needs to pass the bill to take action. That was completely wrong. ”
He continued, “The problem is that there is currently a law passed by the United States Congress that gives the executive branch the power to deny people illegal entry if they enter the country illegally and are detained; The administration will build a border wall. The president is not using executive power to do something that Congress has already approved.”
Abbott added, “The president doesn’t need new laws. He needs a backbone to ensure he says he will enforce the immigration laws that are already in place.”
