Giants will release Mark Glowinski to save $5.7 million cap space

The arrival of free agency means the Giants need to get their finances in order.

Translation: It’s time to build salary cap room.

To that end, the Post confirmed that the Giants plan to release veteran guard Mark Glowinski, who has started 22 games over the past two years. This move will save the Giants $5.7 million on the salary cap in 2024.

Glowinski will turn 32 in May.

He was a sizable deal for general manager Joe Schon in his first year on the job, signing a three-year contract for $18.3 million ($11.4 million guaranteed) before the 2022 season.

Groinski became a mainstay in 2022, starting 16 games at right guard.

Glowinski started the 2023 season opener in a 40-0 loss to the Cowboys, but then replaced the rarely used Marcus McKeithan in the lineup.

The Giants never resolved their guard issues, and Groinski ended up starting four straight games, essentially sitting on the bench from Week 9 until the final game of the season.

After all, Glowinski was the team’s highest-rated guard by Pro Football Focus in 2023, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Giants move on from him.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Darren Waller.

The veteran tight end told the Post on Friday that he is considering retirement.

If he does indeed leave the game, the Giants would save $6.2 million on the 2024 salary cap, but would absorb $7.8 million in dead cap space.

According to Over the Cap, the Giants had $32.6 million in salary cap space before the trade.
