Harris calls Gaza ‘humanitarian catastrophe,’ urges Israel to increase aid

Vice President Harris on Sunday called the situation in the war-torn region a “humanitarian catastrophe” and pressed the Israeli government to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“What we are seeing every day in Gaza is devastating.” harris said He said this in a speech in Selma, Alabama, on Sunday. “We are seeing reports of families eating leaves and animal products. Women are giving birth to malnourished babies with little medical care, and children are dying from malnutrition and dehydration. I am.”

The Biden administration has stepped up its criticism of Israel in recent weeks over the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, particularly after the killing of more than 100 civilians trying to receive aid on Thursday.

“As I have said many times, too many innocent Palestinians were killed,” she said. “Our hearts break for the victims of that terrible tragedy and for the innocent people of Gaza who are clearly suffering a humanitarian catastrophe.”

“The people of Gaza are starving,” she added. “The situation is inhumane. And our common humanity compels us to act.”

President Biden announced Friday that the United States will airlift humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip as negotiations continue over a temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. Biden on Friday stepped up his criticism of Israel over the amount of aid it is allowed to give to the region.

“Innocent people have been caught up in a terrible war, unable to provide for their families. We see the reaction when they try to ask for help. And we need to do more. The United States will take further action,” Biden said.

“The truth is that the aid that is flowing to Gaza right now is not enough anywhere. It is not enough anywhere. Innocent lives are at stake, the lives of children are at stake,” he added.

The airdrop began early Saturday morning. Harris praised the delivery of aid and noted that the United States would work to establish a sea route for aid to enter Gaza.

“The Israeli government needs to do more to significantly increase aid flows,” she said. “No excuses.”

Mr. Biden faces increasing pressure from Democrats to seek a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as the situation in the Gaza Strip worsens and the death toll of Palestinians in Israeli attacks exceeds 30,000.

The Israeli government on Saturday agreed to the framework for a proposed six-week ceasefire, a sign of progress in negotiations, the Associated Press reported.
