Top Democratic lawyer Marc Elias sparked a fierce backlash on Sunday after appearing to mock former President Trump’s ability to receive a fair trial in Washington, D.C., following his primary loss in the race.
Trump received only 676 votes in Sunday’s D.C. Republican primary, while former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley secured her first victory with 1,274 votes.
Mr. Elias, who has made a name for himself on the left as the Democratic Party’s most aggressive election lawyer, linked Mr. Trump’s poor performance to the jury pool in the 2020 election interference trial.
“In a city of 700,000 people, Donald Trump received 676 votes in the Republican primary. It’s a tough jury…” he said. I wrote to X on Sunday night.

His social media posts garnered more than 1 million views overnight. Conservatives argued that Democrats were openly bragging that President Trump would not get a fair trial in a deep blue city.
“Democratic lawyers are openly bragging that Mr. Trump will never get a fair trial or a fair jury in Washington, D.C.,” responded Stephen Miller, a former adviser to President Trump.
The Arizona Republican Party responded, saying, “Admitting that the D.C. judicial system is corrupted by politics is not as flexible as you think it is.”
“Democratic election lawyers and Russian disinformation capitalists are gloating over the fact that it will be impossible for Trump and other conservatives to get a fair trial in Washington, D.C.” would throw an entire family into a concentration camp without thinking twice,” wrote former Pennsylvania Senate candidate Sean Parnell.
“Democrats are bragging about how corrupt they are,” conservative columnist Moshe Hill responded.

“In other words, Mr. Trump will not get a fair trial there. Thank you for acknowledging this! I’m sure his lawyers will be happy to use this tweet in any future appeals,” said another. also commented.
Republican strategist Arthur Schwartz lashed out, saying, “To resolve the issue, you have to put the case in front of a jury. Damn it.”
This district is heavily Democratic, and in the 2020 election, President Biden won 92% of the vote in Washington, DC. No Republican has won the district’s electoral votes in the presidential election.
Trump’s trial stemming from special counsel Jack Smith’s 2020 election interference case was scheduled for this week. The case has been put on hold after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider whether Trump has presidential immunity.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers initially sought to move the trial from Washington last year, arguing, like Mr. Elias, that the jury pool there was tainted. Against Trump.
“You will not get a fair trial in Washington, D.C., or even come close,” President Trump posted on Truth Social in August.
“There are many reasons for this, but one is that this filthy, crime-ridden country, where murders just hit an all-time high and other violent crimes are worse than ever, They are demanding that the federal government take over the shame that has been caused.”
