After all, Joe Mixon isn’t going to test free agency territory.

The Houston Texans have reached an agreement with the Cincinnati Bengals to trade Mixon in exchange for an undisclosed pick, according to multiple reports.

The trade came after the Bengals announced their intention to release Mixon on Monday after agreeing to terms on a contract with veteran running back Zack Moss.

But before Mixon hit the open market, the Texans picked up Mixon because they needed a running back of their own. Running back Devin Singletary, who became a free agent after spending the 2023 season with the Texans, also agreed to a three-year contract with the New York Giants on Monday.

Texans GM Nick Caserio has already filled a number of roster holes heading into the legal tampering period that begins Monday, and he was always expected to be able to thrive at the running back position.

Rather than go after Derrick Henry or Saquon Barkley (although he reportedly offered the latter), Caserio is now considering trading for players who are unlikely to be acquired this offseason.

Mixon was noted for his explosiveness with the Bengals, and he delivered when needed. He had 1,034 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in 2023, and had 52 receptions for 376 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

Mixon has totaled 1,200 scrimmage yards over the past three seasons, including 1,519 yards (1,205 rushing) and 16 touchdowns in his only Pro Bowl year.

The Texans ranked 28th in yards per game on the ground last season, but added another every-down back who can provide a solid rushing attack.
