More Americans trust Trump on trade than Biden, but split on China: Survey

More Americans trust former President Trump’s approach to trade than President Biden, but are divided on his approach to tariffs on China, according to a new poll.

of YouGov pollA poll released Friday found that 42% of Americans somewhat approve of President Trump’s approach to foreign trade, 11 percentage points higher than Biden’s 31%. At the same time, the survey found that 28% strongly or somewhat disapprove of President Trump’s trade policies, and 36% said the same about Biden’s policies.

Independents held a similar view, with 32% supporting Trump and 20% supporting Biden’s trade approach.

President Trump has been advocating for some time to raise tariffs, especially on items imported from China. In February, President Trump Floating If he is re-elected to the White House in November, he will impose tariffs of more than 60% on Chinese goods.

But U.S. adults are divided on his position, with 38% strongly or somewhat approve of him. According to the poll, approximately 35% strongly or somewhat oppose the idea, while 27% are unsure.

The former president’s proposal has 52% support among Republicans, a much higher number than among Democrats, but only 30% support this approach.

Polls show more Americans think a trade war with a communist country would hurt the United States more than China.

President Trump’s proposal received mixed reactions in surveys, with about half of respondents who had an opinion on the issue saying that U.S. trade policy toward China is unfair. About three-quarters of respondents said that China’s trade policy toward the United States is unfair.

Still, one in three survey respondents said they weren’t sure where the front-runners of both parties stood on trade issues.

About 44% of Americans think Mr. Trump wants to raise tariffs, compared to 14% who say the same about Mr. Biden. The survey also found that many respondents said it was likely that Mr. Biden would keep tariffs at the same level.

The YouGov poll was conducted between February 27th and 29th among 1,000 US adults. The survey has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
